Once I figured I had enough, I used a sawzall and cut the boards off the main supports by cutting between the boards and supports. This way you will only be cutting the nails and not the wood. Make sure you have a few good blades for this process.
I left all my boards all natural. With only a quick cleaning with a water and soap solution and a wet rag, how they came off the pallet is how they went on the wall. With a few samples I tried sanding and using various stains but discovered a lot of the distress detail within the wood itself disappeared.
Once I had all of my boards cut and ready to go, I then started on my wall. I designed the wall to be my entertainment wall for my basement rec-room/man cave. I incorporated an area that would hold all of the electronic devices, a storage area and access to a larger storage area than is located under a set of stairs located behind the wall.
I first started to line the area that would house the electronic devices.
Once that was finished, I started on the wall. I decided to paint the back wall the boards would be nailed onto a grey color. As most of my boards had a grey tint to them, I figured if I had any gaps between the boards as I went along, the grey beind them would blend in better.
I started my first row of boards in the middle of the wall and worked down keeping each row level as I went. Then I worked up, again keeping as level as possible until it was complete.
When installing the boards, try to use the same width of boards for each row. This will make the project a lot easier as you go and you will not get gaps between the boards in between the rows You will find that every pallet is different. Pallet boards can range from 3 inches to 6 inches in width.
For the two openings for the storage areas I used 3/4 inch plywood and simply nailed pallet boards to the outside trying to follow the same line as each row.
To comply with my rustic look, I used plain galvanized hinges that you can pick up at pretty much any hardware store. I boiled the hinges and screws in a 50/50 bleach and water mixture in a pot for 30 minutes (do this outside on a camping stove or bbq burner and in a pot that you dont care if it gets ruined).
The rustic barn style sliding door latches I again used pallet boards.
Here is the final product:
